Case Study – Installing a new wooden floor in Woodbridge
At Hollis Flooring each job is unique but can provide a fantastic insight into what you may need to consider when thinking about making a change to your floors. On a recent project in Woodbridge Hollis Flooring were brought in to repair and replace flooring throughout a family home for the new owner. We were required to work around other tradesmen and the arrival of the furniture to the residence.
Whilst working around others can add an extra complication to any project, we strongly believe that it is important to be able to accommodate our clients’ needs and time frame where possible.
Preparing the area:
Our first job was to remove and dispose of the carpets in the house and to remove rotten floorboards in 2 bedrooms to allow inspection of the joists by a specialist. The existing skirting boards and thresholds were also removed, new chipboard subfloors were glued and screwed in place, and pipe runs were clearly marked. Finally, a silane-based damp proof membrane was added to the ground floor this was applied as a precaution to protect the new wood floor that would be laid above it.
Preparing Materials:
Once the decorators had finished and the paint dried, we delivered the new floor for acclimatisation. It is important when laying a new wooden floor that the material is allowed to reach equilibrium with its new environment. We ensure this by carrying out relative humidity testing of the room, and the materials.
All new doors and thresholds were also primed and oiled to match the new flooring ahead of installation. Where required doorframes were undercut to allow room for the new floors to be laid.
Fitting:
At Hollis, we take care to measure areas and plan the lay of the flooring to look as good as possible, in this case carrying the pattern through doorways to match either side of the thresholds. The floorboards were fitted with a glue and screw method and sisal carpet was installed to the staircase, cupboards and wardrobes before finally new skirting was installed throughout. Finally the new floor was cleaned with a spray mop and the manufacturers recommended cleaner before handover. A care kit was also issued to the customer along with advice on ongoing maintenance.
A well fitted, a well-maintained wood floor can last decades, and not only is one of the best-looking floor types to use in residential settings but also one of the hardiest.
