Buying Guide – Carpet Types

One of the most popular floor types, carpets are available in a wide and diverse range of options, colours and patterns and when it comes to picking out a new one it can be a little overwhelming. That’s why we’ve pulled together a simple guide of the different types of carpet that are on the market. You can also check out our guide on things to consider when choosing a new carpet here.

Woven Carpets:

Most of us remember and know of heavily patterned carpets, often still found in Pubs and Hotels across the country, as Axminsters. Axminster is actually just one type of woven carpet created by weaving the pile directly into the backing, along with Wiltons and Flatweaves. This method allows for complex pattern design and provides a hardwearing finish, which is why they are still popular in the hospitality industry.

Axminster/ Wilton Carpets: Very durable, these carpets are fantastic for high-traffic areas. Fibres are woven in and out of the backing material using traditional methods for an excellent finish. The primary difference between Axminster and Wilton carpets being Wilton’s are woven with a loom that weaves the continuous strand.

Flatweave Carpets: Utilising more modern techniques, flatweave carpets are commonly found in commercial environments, where there is a demand for both very durable carpets at a lower cost then what is commonly associated with other woven types.

Tufted Carpets:

These offer exceptional value for money and are now the most common type of carpet produced. Tufted carpets have a secondary, latex applied backing, allowing an effective stretch fit with gripper and underlay. Available in loop or cut pile variations, tufted carpets can be incredibly diverse, offering hard-wearing finishes or prioritising comfort and luxury as detailed below.

Cut Pile: Versatile and one of the most popular types of carpet today, cut pile is when the carpet fibres have been sheared. The length of the fibres will often determine the feel of the carpet, with longer fibres giving a softer feel and shorter offering better durability. Types of cut pile include Twist, Saxony, Velvet and Frieze.

Loop: Unlike the cut pile carpet, loop pile carpets haven’t been sheared, so the fibres remain looped into the backing. Often able to have complex designs and patterns, the loop pile, like the cut pile’s feel will be determined by the length, and type of fibre used in the carpet. Variations of loop pile carpets include; level, uneven and cut & loop.
